DENVER PHOTOGRAPHER | Great Sand Dunes National Park Flying Dress

It was a beautiful weekend in October for a flying dress photoshoot in the Sand Dunes 4 hours south east of Denver, Colorado. The drive was spectacular with the trees really showing off against the snow-capped mountains.

The dresses were rented from Traveling Gowns in Parker, Colorado and I would highly recommend them. There is no way I would have been able to fit those dresses plus all of my camera equipment in my carry-on luggage. Sasha has several dresses to choose from and they each come beautiful steamed and ready in a beautiful pink garment bag. She also includes pins, body suits and clips to ensure the fit is right.

Our first shoot was at sunset. It was COLD but my model persevered. We weren’t quite expecting the wind, but to be honest, we really didn’t have any expectations at all. We arrived at the park straight from Denver hoping that the visitor center would still be open. It was not. Luckily, there was a vending machine outside of the locked bathrooms so we were able to plug in a curling iron and get busy. I considered this shoot a trial run not having huge expectations. We were able to get some nice shots despite the cold and wind. The mood was totally different than that of the next day - moody and sultry as opposed to light and bright.

Saturday was the day of the eclipse and we got started just as the sun was being covered. The weather was cold but still and the shadows of the solar eclipse were trippy. The blue dress was perfect for what I wanted. While it weighed close to 5 pounds, it flew when fanned. It was the perfect shoot with a crystal blue sky, a beautiful model and sand as far as the eye could see. Bucket list item - check!
